12 beauty products we tried and loved in 2016

At the very least, 2016 was an excellent year for beauty.  By Denise Li

This is one of the products I started using to ‘greenify’ my skincare regime and after a month or so of using it, I was sold. First of all, it has a incredibly short ingredient list of just four ingredients, which is always a good indicator that the product is free from excessive chemical preservatives and other nasties. The main moisturising ingredient here is squalene, which is a type of antioxidant and moisturising agent naturally produced by our bodies. The squalene in this product is extracted from olives. The bottle may only contain 15ml of product, but trust me, it is very concentrated and only two or three drops is enough for your entire face.

New Brand Onboard!

We are excited to announce a new brand onboard!

Winter Organics is a young Singapore brand that offers all-natural skin care at affordable pricing.  Using only the finest ingredients from nature, the range is manufactured in Australia and has attained the Australian Certified Organic (ACO) label.

We are excited with this partnership for 2 main reasons.  Firstly, the brand’s philosophy and values resonate with our own principles – the products are free of harsh synthetic chemicals, are environmentally friendly, are against animal testing/cruelty, and are affordable for the general market.  Secondly, it has always been our desire to work with and support local homegrown brands.

We use human guinea pigs to test all products before making a decision to carry a new product or brand.  We find Winter Organics’ range very suitable for normal, combination and sensitive skin; and with its affordable pricing, it is an excellent starting point for young consumers who wish to try out green skin care brands without burning a hole in the pocket. For the mommies, this is a great range for your tweens and teens whose skin is starting to change as they enter puberty.

Miracle for My Skin: Love Organic, Love Botáni

In the third trimester that I was pregnant with Ethan, three eczema patches showed up on my face that left me wondering what went wrong with my skincare regime. At first, I thought it was just pregnancy hormones messing my skin up, but when the three scaly, itchy, dry patches grew larger, even long after I have given birth, I had a hunch that my body was reacting to the chemicals in the skincare products I was using and that it was time to overhaul my beauty regime. Yes, I was on a mission to clean things up, quite literally, because I am convinced my skin was suffering from the effects of harsh chemicals slathered on my face.

Acne cures: This organic blemish cream actually gets rid of my pimples overnight!

Rescue Blemish Cream2

This product is an affordable acne cream that’s natural, and organic, and works while you sleep … What more could you ask for? By Alyssa Dhaliwal

Not that long ago I wrote about a rather expensive pimple sticker that does wonders for zits overnight. This week, it’s a rather unique little jar of blemish cream that I’ve been using since I ran out of my stickers, and it’s surprisingly effective.

I’ve written about the brand Botani before, with regards to its Olive Oil Serum and Soothing Skin Mist, and I might just love this blemish cream even more than those.

Acne Cream to the Rescue!

My holy grail to dampen pimple growth was Oxy10. My mum would rave so much about how Oxy10 cured her zits and so being her obedient daughter, I started using it to treat pimples. It was effective at first but I soon realise that it couldn’t be used to treat acne for long, especially those stubborn ones. Applying it on my skin only makes my skin really dry and scaly.

We’ve definitely been misinformed about the use of topical acne cream that treats the surface but not the roots of the cause. I’ve been told that benzoyl peroxide and retin-A ingredients to cure acne but little did I know, these chemicals only cause our skin dermis layer to degrade further.

Botani - Active Olive Squalene!

Just last week, I took a week leave to a sunny beach resort in Malaysia and took the opportunity to test Botani Natural Organic Skincare from Australia while subjecting my skin to hot sun and simple skincare routine

Botani utilizes Active Olive Squalene, one of the main ingredients for good skin health. The products put to test are the Purifying Cleanser, Soothing Toning Mist, Olive Skin Serum and Rescue Eye Treatment. I will write about the products in order of my preferences…

Review: A Mum's Opinion of the Botani Product Line

Contributor Shubhada Bhide gives us her first-hand review of the Botani product line. Read on to find out what she liked and didn’t like.

As a Mum and a woman, I always prefer as simple and fuss free, as natural skin care products as possible. I see to it that they are safe even for sensitive skin and even if my pre-teen daughter decides to try them out, they should cause any side-effects to her skin.

I also get dry skin sometimes and hence no harsh chemicals and ingredients for me in skin care routine. So while on the lookout for some such products, I discovered Botani.

Botani Olive Skin Serum

If you’ve been following me on Instagram, you will have seen this tiny bottle pop up in a lot of my skincare posts. And with good reason. Just two to three drops smoothed on to damp skin (which you can dampen with a face mist) sink in to give you the softest, hydrated skin. The key ingredient in this is olive squalene, followed by vitamins C and E and lecithin, also a natural moisturiser that helps all the ingredients penetrate the skin. The reason my skin (and yours as well) loves this so much is because olive squalene is akin to the natural moisturisers present in your skin…

Botáni Purify Facial Cleanser : I've Switched to Organic Skincare Products

“Now, you don’t have to pay for the brand but you pay for the efficacy of the product.”

After switching to organic skincare brands, I really start to wonder why there are chemical-laden skincare products available in the market to begin with. The good news is that you don’t have to pay extra for a product just because it is branded with a label associated with branded good. For natural or organic certified skincare products, you are simply paying for the botanical extracts and the technology to extract it. It’s even better if you purchase from social-conscious enterprises who uses recyclable and biodegrable packaging or support a green cause to offset their carbon footprint.

Botani, an Australian organic skincare brand, has never failed to amaze me with their way of showing how effective plant extracts are in beautifying our skin so naturally. I love their serums and scrubs but I love their facial cleanser even more.

Botáni : Natural Skincare for Oily and Troubled Skin

Hi, Glitzies! Recently, I’ve been using this brand of skin care products called Botáni which has been working really well on my skin that I would have to write about it and share it with you guys. I think this brand of products works really well for my oily combination skin type and it’s a safe product to try it too.

As I’m inching closer and closer to the ideal lifestyle of living consciously, I am slowly drawing myself towards skincare products that have a simple ingredient list of natural ingredients. Nothing is too complicated here and very few chemicals were added. Somehow, my skin is started to accept such products better than those which has a list of other ingredients which I knew nothing about being added into.

What makes Botáni suitable for those eco-conscious individuals, like myself?
It uses 100 % plant active ingredient. It’s also vegan-friendly and an ideal skin formula for all seasons.  The product formula is also bio-compatible with human skin. In addition, it contains no artificial fragrances, colours, petrochemicals or mineral oils.

Viva Woman: Buff up and get smoother skin with Botáni exfoliating scrubs for face and body

I’ve been scrubbing myself happy using Botáni products. One is their Exfoliating 2 in 1 Scrub & Mask for face and the other is their Spirulina Salt Scrub for body. Both scrubs contain some uncommon but skin friendly ingredients and are a delight to my senses and a pampering experience for my skin.

Botáni is not a new brand. They’ve been around since 1994 and I’ve reviewed their products some years ago. They are a range of toxic-free, natural skin care brand created by Australian based naturopath and herbalist, Barbara Filokostas, to address skin issues and imbalances.

I met Barbara earlier this year when she visited Singapore because her products are now available here. So that was when I was introduced to her new offerings including these two featured here.

8 Beauty Products for Singapore's Insanely Hot Weather

50mL Purify Facial Cleanser

Botani Purify Facial Cleanser, from $32

Contrary to what most beauty brands will try to tell you, cleansing – not moisturising – is the most important step in your beauty regime, especially with our hot, humid weather. If you don’t cleanse well enough to get rid of all that gunk in your pores and on the surface of your skin, even the most technologically advanced moisturiser will not help you get the healthy, radiant skin you’re after. While our first instinct might be to grab a cleanser that leaves our skin feeling squeaky clean, well, that’s really not the way to go. Cleansers that work up a large lather tend to strip your skin of essential oils, leaving it even oilier in the long run. I like this one from Botani  because just a little of it mixed with water is enough to smooth over your entire face. It doesn’t foam up, but leaves skin feeling clean, yet soft and supple. Lots of cleansers promise to leave your skin feeling moisturised post-cleanse but this is one of the few that follow through on that promise.

Botani’s creamy mint-green formula exfoliates gently and boasts olive and shea butter, an intensely hydrating cocktail of plant oils that leaves skin feeling silky smooth – Mum can even skip moisturiser post-shower if she likes.

This all-natural anti-ageing hydrating serum is great for dry skin

Looking for a natural and organic skincare solution for ageing skin? This skin serum does a great job at keeping the skin hydrated without looking or feeling oily.  By Alyssa Dhaliwal

When it comes to skincare, there are two vast ends of the spectrum: Those who enjoy their elaborate 12-step anti-ageing routine; and others who might cleanse their skin occasionally and stick to a simple moisturiser with SPF. If you lean more towards the simple end of the spectrum and are more conscious about what chemicals go into your beauty products, natural and organic skincare might appeal to you more.

Developed by an Australian naturopath, this natural anti-ageing Olive Skin Serum by Botani ($52 for 15ml) is an olive “oil” serum that, when used correctly, promises not to leave your skin feeling or looking oily in the slightest. The key ingredient in this is something called squalene that’s derived here from olives but is also something that naturally occurs in our skin (which is why this serum is supposed to work so well on our faces).

Its purpose? Squalene functions as something of an in-built natural moisturiser. However, the brand says that we produce less of it as we age: While our skin contains up to 12 percent squalene at birth, that amount declines from the age of 25.

Using too many products in a short span of time really broke my skin out not too long ago, so I’ve been trying my best to simplify my skincare routine lately. I was introduced to Botani a few months ago, and the discovery of a brand that produced natural and organic skincare products free from petrochemicals, mineral oils, silicones, parabens, sulfates, artificial fragrances or colours, and animal-derived ingredients was incredibly appealing.

What is squalene, why you need them, & how you can incorporate them in your daily routine

Did you know that our body naturally produces its own “moisturiser”? It’s called squalene! Unfortunately, this natural moisturising agent starts to decline from the age of 25 and this is partly why we tend to start seeing fine lines and other signs of ageing from this age onwards. Yikes!

While regularly moisturising can help to ensure those things don’t occur at an accelerated pace, it won’t help to moisturise as well as squalene would. There are a couple of ways to get squalene and one of it is from shark’s liver – which isn’t nice at all because #noanimalcruelty. But there’s a botanical solution to this: through olives!

Botáni, is an all natural skincare line that contains olive squalene to help replenish the moisture in our skin given the decline of natural squalene that our body produces.

If you’re worried that slapping olive oil on your face might be a tad bit too heavy, Botáni has the non-greasy Olive Skin Serum that you can use as a moisturiser for day and night. It can also be used on other parts of the body to moisturise and reduce the appearance of scars.

Ingredients to Avoid If You're Looking For All-Natural Skincare

Vegan-friendly, eco-friendly, organic, holistic … just what do these terms mean and, more importantly, what can they do for our skin? Skincare expert Barbara Filokostas, founder of Botani, shares her insights. By Tan Lili

Mention “squalene”, and the first thing that comes to mind is probably that high concentrations of it can be found in shark liver oil. But did you know that squalene can also be found in all plants and animals, including humans? More interestingly, that it is our body’s very own in-built moisturizer?

That was one of the many fascinating facts I gleaned from the media launch of Botani, one of Australia’s top natural brands that marries naturopathic principles and botanical science. Melbourne-based founder Barbara Filokostas, a naturopath and herbalist, was in Singapore during the launch to explain her brand’s ethos, as well as give us her insights of squalene.

Material World Singapore: 4 Awesome Things Material World Tried This Week

Denise is addicted to… Botani Exfoliating 2 in 1 Scrub & Mask S$59

Ever since I read about how detrimental plastic microbeads in beauty products are for the environment, I’ve avoided exfoliating products until I know for sure that what I’m about to use is free of the ocean-polluting stuff. Instead of plastic, this scrub/mask uses a natural alternative made from jojoba. Gentle enough to be used daily, I first used it as an exfoliator, before leaving it on my skin for five minutes.

When I washed it off, I was amazed at how soft and clear my skin felt and looked. As it contains clay (of the Australian bentonite kind), it also has clarifying properties, yet did not leave my skin feeling taut and dehydrated as some other clay masks I tried. After washing it off with warm water, I found that the skincare products I applied after were more quickly absorbed into my skin. Oh, and this product smells oh-so-good, too.
